A tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, claimed 30 lives and left 60 people injured in the early hours before dawn, according to the police. Many of the injured have been admitted to hospitals for treatment.
Police officer Vaibhav Krishna confirmed that 25 victims have been identified so far. The official announcement came after social media and local reports speculated about casualties, though there were inconsistencies in the reported numbers.
The stampede occurred at the Sangam area during Mauni Amavasya, a highly sacred day when thousands gather for a ritual dip. Witnesses said the chaos began when large crowds pushed through barricades in a rush to reach the river.
A pilgrim, recalled how her group of 60 people got caught in the sudden surge of the crowd. “We were nine together, but suddenly people started pushing, and we got trapped. Some fell, and everything became uncontrollable,” she told reporters.
Another woman at a hospital, whose child was among the injured, described the panic. “There was no space to move. Some people were laughing while we pleaded with them to be careful of the children,” she said.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Maha Kumbh, Vaibhav Krishna, assured that the situation is now under control.

Mauni Amavasya is the new moon day in the Hindu month of Magh. On this day, the Sun and Moon align in the Capricorn zodiac sign, making it astrologically significant. “Maun” means silence, and devotees observe silence until they take a holy dip, believing it brings spiritual benefits.
Special Bathing Days at Kumbh Mela
Certain days at the Kumbh Mela are considered especially sacred for ritual bathing (snan).
- Makar Sankranti: The first Amrit Snan (previously called Shahi Snan).
- Mauni Amavasya: The second and one of the most crowded.
- Vasant Panchami (Feb 3): The third significant bathing day.
- Maha Shivratri (Feb 26): The last major bathing day before the Kumbh concludes.
On these days, holy saints (sadhus) lead the first ritual dip, followed by thousands of devotees, as planetary alignments are believed to enhance the day’s spiritual importance.

कैसे हुई भगदड़?
यह हादसा संगम क्षेत्र में मौनी अमावस्या के पावन स्नान के दौरान हुआ, जब हजारों श्रद्धालु एक साथ डुबकी लगाने के लिए उमड़ पड़े। प्रत्यक्षदर्शियों के मुताबिक, भीड़ बढ़ने पर लोग बैरिकेड्स तोड़ने लगे, जिससे भगदड़ मच गई।
प्रत्यक्षदर्शियों की आपबीती
- श्रद्धालु: “हम 60 लोगों के ग्रुप में आए थे। हमारी 9 लोगों की छोटी टोली थी। अचानक भीड़ में धक्का-मुक्की होने लगी, और हम फंस गए। कई लोग नीचे गिर गए, और भीड़ बेकाबू हो गई।”
- एक घायल बच्चे की मां: “भीड़ इतनी ज्यादा थी कि हिलने की भी जगह नहीं थी। कुछ लोग हमें धक्का देते हुए हंस रहे थे, जबकि हम बच्चों की सुरक्षा के लिए उनसे रहम की भीख मांग रहे थे।”
पुलिस का बयान
महाकुंभ के डिप्टी इंस्पेक्टर जनरल (DIG) वैभव कृष्णा ने कहा कि स्थिति अब नियंत्रण में है।
मौनी अमावस्या क्या है, और कुंभ के खास स्नान दिनों पर इतनी भीड़ क्यों होती है?
मौनी अमावस्या हिंदू पंचांग के माघ मास की अमावस्या होती है। इस दिन सूर्य और चंद्रमा मकर राशि में एक साथ होते हैं, जिसे ज्योतिषीय रूप से बेहद शुभ माना जाता है। “मौन” का अर्थ है शांति या चुप रहना, और इस दिन भक्त सुबह स्नान से पहले मौन व्रत रखने को पवित्र मानते हैं।
कुंभ मेले में विशेष स्नान दिवस
कुछ खास दिन कुंभ में शाही स्नान या अमृत स्नान के लिए बेहद महत्वपूर्ण माने जाते हैं:
- मकर संक्रांति: पहला अमृत स्नान
- मौनी अमावस्या: दूसरा और सबसे भीड़भाड़ वाला स्नान
- वसंत पंचमी (3 फरवरी): तीसरा प्रमुख स्नान
